If you ever wanted to be an artist, this is a book for you.
“An Artist’s Life” is my story of an architect’s relentless search for his soul’s desire.
After studying architecture at Yale and apprenticing with such luminary designers as Frank Gehry and Charles Moore, I knew that being an architect could not satisfy my fundamental desire. I found my path bending toward great visual artists, including Rembrandt, Van Gogh, Matisse, Picasso, and Warhol.
My talent is for drawing, and 50 years ago I started drawing self-portraits.
At first glance, there appear to be a dozen sitters rather than one, but I now see this conveys my unrest.
The story, co-authored with Peter Lownds, derives from my original diaries. and combines art and architectural history with events in LA and my life. I now see how my skills improved and I became looser, freer, and more observant until I fully realized I am an artist and not just a dabbler.
